だからオージー英語は難しいんだってば。

ウェブログ、「今日の覚書、集めてみました」さんの31日のエントリで、オーストラリアのベテラン外交官（たぶん既に引退しているのだと思うが、元国連大使、元インドネシア大使など、ものすごい経歴）であるRichard Woolcottの著書から、異言語間翻訳作業における言語的混乱（いわゆるlost in translationの状態）についての部分を紹介したガーディアン掲載ロイター記事を知る。

オーストラリアの外交官が現場で目撃した通訳珍騒動集、という感じで、米原万里さんのご著書に通じるものがあるのだが、中でもすごいのがオージー英語→日本語の翻訳失敗事例である。

According to the book, the former Australian prime minister Bob Hawke left his Japanese audience bewildered when he used the Australian colloquial phrase "I am not here to play funny buggers" to dismiss a trivial question.

"For Japanese interpreters, however, this was a real problem. They went into a huddle to consult on the best way to render 'funny buggers' into Japanese," Mr Woolcott wrote.

つまり、Richard Woolcottの本に、オーストラリアのボブ・ホーク元首相が日本の聴衆を前に話した際、やたらと細かいだけの質問をスルーしようとして、オーストラリア特有の表現である "I am not here to play funny buggers" を使ったときのエピソードが書かれている。

元首相は要するに「そんなどうでもいいことで時間を無駄遣いしたくない」というようなことを言いたかったのだろうが、これを「翻訳」しなければならない言語屋さんたちとしては、はっきり確信が持てなかったのだろう。通訳者同士で、funny buggersを的確に翻訳するにはどうしたらいいかをひそひそと相談した。

……今これを読んでおられる方にも、ここでfunnyとbuggerの意味を見ておいていただきたいと思います。

見ていただけたでしょうか。では先に行きましょう。現場の通訳者さんたちはどう翻訳したか：

The interpreters told him they had then told the audience: "I am not here to play laughing homosexuals with you".

つまり、発言者である元首相に通訳者たちが「こういうふうに訳しました」と伝えた内容は、funny buggersの直訳だった。

いやね、オージー英語の口語表現というかコロキアルなフレーズは難しいです。さらには、明らかにコロキアルだとわかるものでも直訳せざるを得ないほどテンパった現場というのもあると思います。

それにしても、これは可笑しすぎるうえにひどすぎる。真面目な話の場でこれがと思うと、ひどすぎて笑いが止まらない。

なお、buggerというのは、UK語でもときどき出てくるんですが（ひどい用例では、Bugger off! で F*** off! とほぼ同意、とか）、オージーではもっと違う用法も（下記引用中太字部分）。

もうひとつ、テレグラフ記事から、別の事例。これはオーストラリア人が中国語でしゃべってやらかした例。

Australia's Labour Party leader Kevin Rudd, now a master of Mandarin, struggled with the language as a young diplomat in 1984 when he interpreted his ambassador's speech on the close relationship between Australia and China.

"Australia and China are enjoying simultaneous orgasms in their relationship," Mr Woolcott quoted Rudd as telling the audience in Mandarin.

オーストラリアの労働党党首のケヴィン・ラッドは、今では中国語はお手の物だが、1984年に駆け出しの外交官だったころには非常に手を焼いていた。彼は両国の関係の緊密さについての大使の発言を、「オーストラリアと中国はその（肉体）関係において同時に絶頂に達し」と発言してしまった。

昔、似たような事例を直接経験したことがある。外国のエアラインで日本に戻ってくるときに、日本語が使える乗務員さんが「みなさま、右手をごらんください。富士山が丸見えでございます」とアナウンスしたことがあった。彼女としてはあまりの絶景に感動して乗客に知らせたいと思ったのだろう。実際に雲ひとつない天候で、富士山が非常に美しく見えたのだが、「丸見え」ではまるでぱんつである。
