「次期首相！それは本当にうちの国歌ですか？」事件＠ベルギー

さっぱり意味がわからないのだが、ベルギーで組閣作業中の次期首相がベルギーの国歌を歌うべきところでフランスの国歌を歌ってしまったというハプニングが発生した。

「なるほど、ベルギーはフラマン語圏とフランス語圏で対立してますからな」と納得しかけたそこのあなた！　意味がわからないのは、その次期首相氏がフラマン語圏の人であるという点なのですよ。

Yves Leterme, head of the Flemish Christian Democrats, broke into La Marseillaise instead of Belgium's La Brabanconne on the national day.

His gaffe was filmed by Belgian RTBF television, as he was about to attend a church service in Brussels on Saturday.

Yves Leterme（イヴ・ルテルム）が党首をつとめるのはthe Flemish Christian Democratsこと、Christen-Democratisch en Vlaams（キリスト教民主党）。2007年の総選挙で第一党となり（この選挙、結果がかなり難しいもので、組閣まで時間がかかっている）、組閣の作業中の土曜日に、教会に入ろうとした党首に突撃インタビューした取材陣が「国歌を歌ってください」と頼んだ（フランス語がわからないので、YouTubeに上がっているビデオを見ても、どのような言葉で頼んだのかはわからない。情けない）。

Asked Saturday by a reporter from a state television channel, RTBF, to sing the Belgian national anthem, "La Brabançonne," on the day commemorating the accession of King Leopold I of Belgium to the throne in 1831, Yves Leterme, a Flemish politician who is struggling to form a coalition government, smiled at the camera and blurted out, "Allons enfants de la patrie" - the first words of "La Marseillaise."

Pressed by the reporter as to whether he really thought those were the words, Leterme, the head of the Flemish Christian Democrat party, replied: "Oh, I don't know." Shortly afterward, he was filmed making a telephone call on his cellphone during a religious service, and, in a final gaffe, he proclaimed in an interview at the independence festivities that his countrymen were, in fact, celebrating "the proclamation of the Constitution."

これはひどい。国歌を間違える、お祈りの最中に携帯電話をかける、この日はベルギーのナショナル・デー（国民の日）だったのだが、その日が何の日かについても彼は正しく認識していない（本当は、1831年にレオポルド１世が初代ベルギー国王となった日だが、彼は「憲法発布の日」と答えているそうで）。なおBBCによれば、この日が何の日かを認識しているベルギー国民は５人に１人だそうだ。

ベルギーといえば、昨年12月にテレビ局が「フラマン語圏は独立しました」という嘘ニュースを流して騒ぎになったりしているし、フラマン語圏の人種差別主義の極右勢力が黒人を襲撃して殺すという事件もあった。

そういう中、「次期首相が堂々と国歌を間違える」という珍事件に次のような一種「肯定的」な評価があるそうだ。IHTより：

Some Belgian commentators said Leterme's ignorance was a healthy sign of a nation free of nationalism. "I can understand why some people think it is ridiculous," said Bernard Bulcke, the European correspondent for De Standaard, the leading Flemish newspaper. "But one must remember that Belgium was an artificial construction, we have been invaded throughout our history by other powers and created by them. Maybe it is positive that nationalism doesn't exist in Belgium. So we can't sing the national anthem. Who cares?"

うはは、ベルギーという国は元々が人工的なものなのだからこれでいいのだ、って、気持ちのよいことを。しかしだからってフランスの国歌というのも。それが例えばGod Save the Queenだったら「まったく関係ねーよ」で「この政治家はアホ」になっただろうけれど。

Known as "Mr Flanders", Mr Leterme won the general election last month on a pledge to devolve more power to the regions. A poll today showed that a quarter of Belgians believe this could lead to the break-up of their country.

"This was no Belgian joke. There is a fear that this was a subliminal message to the French-speakers," said Le Soir newspaper. When he is in Brussels "you could say that Mr Flanders is on a visit to a foreign country".

こんなに堂々としたサブリミナル・メッセージはないと思うが。(^^;) なお、こんなことを言っているのはほんとに一部だけのようで、タイムズのこの記事の下のほうには「全然問題にならない」という論調のベルギーの報道が紹介されています。

それと、ベルギー国歌のややこしさについて：

Mr Leterme could be forgiven for some confusion. The Belgian national anthem, the Brabanconne (song of Brabant) has three versions in the three national languages, French, Flemish and German, which all have different English translations. The Flemish version, for example, opens with a reference to "our holy fathers" while the French extols "our dear mother Belgium".

But the symbolism of his gaffe has not been lost on French-speaking Wallonia. The anthem was written in 1830 by a French-Belgian revolutionary who was later killed in the independence struggle with the Dutch.

なるほど、歌詞がフラマン語、フランス語、ドイツ語の３種類あり、それぞれ内容も違っていて、作曲者はオランダからの独立戦争で死んだフランス系の革命兵士。
