ウェブ・ブラウザのOperaが、中国資本になるようだ。

11月に、Firefoxが42.0になったときに、「メモリのバカ食い」が発生し、やたらと強制終了するようになったので、メインのブラウザをOperaに変更した（ついでに、元Operaの人たちが新たに開発しているVivaldiというブラウザのベータ版も試用している）ということを書いた。

それから3ヶ月ほど経過し、その間にFirefoxは43を経て44になり、現在は44.0.1である。43では42の「メモリのバカ食い」のバグが修正されたと聞いたのでまたFFを使うようになり、44になっても安定していることを確認して「標準のブラウザ」をOperaからFFに戻し、現在は快適にFFを使っている（Operaも併用はしている）。

そしてまたFFが使用に耐えないような状態になったら、Operaをメインに使うようにしようかな……と思っているところに、ちょっと衝撃的なニュースがあった。

最初にそれを知ったときは、個人的に「東スポ」程度にしか信用していないTech系のゴシップ媒体が流していただけなのでより手堅いところの記事が出るまではスルーしていたが、日本語圏ではその媒体の日本語版によってかなり広まっていたようだ。英語圏では続いて、CNNの記事が出ていた。

Remember the Opera browser? A group of Chinese investors has offered to buy it for $1.2 billion.

Opera Software (OPESF) said the consortium consists of Chinese Internet firms Kunlun and Qihoo (QIHU), backed by two Chinese private equity funds.

The Norway-based company claims to have more than 350 million users for browsing and mobile advertising.

It said the takeover would allow gaming firm Kunlun and mobile advertising firm Qihoo to sell their products and services to Opera's user base.

CNNの記事には「中国資本が国外の企業を記録的ペースで買収している」という2月3日付けの記事へのリンクがあり、Operaについての記事も、「2016年の最初の1ヶ月で、中国企業は66の外国企業を買収する計画を告知している。これは総額で680億ドルの価値となり、2015年の総額の60％に相当する。また、その後、中国の投資家たちがシカゴ証券取引所を買うことで合意している」と結ばれている。

ウォール・ストリート・ジャーナルもCNNと同じころか少し後に記事を出している。

The Chinese bidders, including security-software firm Qihoo 360 Technology Co. and online-game company Beijing Kunlun Tech Co., on Wednesday offered to acquire Opera shares at 71 Norwegian kroner apiece ($8.27), a 46% premium to their last trading price on Friday. Trading in Opera shares was suspended on Friday amid takeover rumors. When trading resumed on Wednesday, the stock soared more than 40%, and closed up 33% at 65.10 kroner.

Opera’s board said it supported the bid, adding that shareholders holding a combined 33% interest in the company intended to tender their shares.

The Norwegian company, whose browsers are less known than rival products made by Alphabet Inc. or Microsoft Corp. , could gain the financial muscle it has lacked to place its software in more electronic devices, analysts said. ...

……というわけで、まだ最終確定ではないが、話はほぼ決まっているようだ。

“We believe that the consortium, with its breadth of expertise and strong market position in emerging markets, will be a strong owner of Opera,” said chief executive Lars Boilesen.

For the acquisition to go through, more than 90% of Opera’s shareholders will have to accept the offer. Large shareholders accounting for 33% of its shares have already agreed to accept it.

“Facebook and Google have their ecosystems and now we have one too, in a part of the world that is growing incredibly fast and where we will become very strong,” Boilesen told Reuters. “We want to be an ecosystem with a billion users.”

で、ここまで見てきた記事のいずれも、技術系の企業が中国資本になった場合にどんな変化があるかを過去の実例を通して示唆するといった「ジャーナリズムとしてのお約束」の記述も特にないようだが、いろいろ考えると……いや、「考える」までもなく「思い出してみる」だけでよいかもしれないが……、私の選択は「今まで魚をありがとう」になるだろう。

と、このように単なる閲覧ができるようにして気づいたのだが、Firefoxでの閲覧履歴がインポートされてる? インストール中に「インポート」について何も設定してないけど?

さらに、「マイ・ドキュメント」に入れてあるHTML文書のアイコンが、私が「既定のブラウザ」にしているFirefoxのものから、Operaの赤いドーナッツになってる。何も設定していないのに、こういうことをされるのは、正直ちょっとやな感じ。
