France weighs a step to far Right
The French were entertained by a feisty debate but it will not swing the election, writes Emma-Kate Symons

While Royal has called for the French tricolour to be flown from French homes on Bastille Day, Sarkozy has reclaimed the far Right's heroine Joan of Arc. He has a fetish for La Marseillaise. He will not tolerate a France of fanaticism, forced marriage, girls compelled to wear veils, or those who refuse to accept the non-negotiable values of France with its Christian heritage, laicite (secularism) and freedom of expression.
The strategy appears to have worked. On April 22, Le Pen was eliminated in the first round with his lowest score since the 1980s: only 10.5 per cent of the vote, with Sarkozy the main beneficiary.
But according to French soccer star Lillian Thuram, Sarkozy is "awakening the hidden racism" of the French by normalising the traditional discourse of Le Pen and taking back voter support from the far Right.
"The words of Le Pen have never been so present and what is so dramatic is that they are used by a man from a major political party. I find that sad," Thuram says.

BNP stalls despite record number of candidates

One positive is the lack of a breakthrough for the BNP, who fielded more candidates than they have for a generation.
British National Party - Getting Bigger and Better in the Southwest
However the top three best results in unlikely Southwest locations are:-
In third place: Nick Baker, winning almost 14% in Okehampton in central Devon.
In second place: Robert Baehr, who took more than 15% in Yeovil - beating the Labour Party and three independents.
And, in Number One Spot: Robert Hossack, who took over 18% in St. Austell in Cornwall (having canvassed nearly all the ward)!

However, the British National Party (BNP) came within 2,580 votes of winning a north Wales regional seat in the Welsh assembly election, winning 9.4% of regional vote in Wrexham, which has a large Polish community.

The dark side of English nationalism, the British National Party, was wholeheartedly rejected by voters in the council elections south of the Border. The BNP had planned an attempt for electoral breakthrough, but the far right party gained only two seats overall after fielding a record 767 candidates. In the key battleground of Sandwell in the West Midlands, Labour and LibDem candidates worked together to deny the BNP political traction.
However, the BNP polled more than 4000 votes in the Central Scotland region and 3865 in Glasgow, taking just over 24,600 votes overall in the regional list poll - not enough to see its candidates elected, but more than enough to prevent any complacency among Scottish anti-racism campaigners.

In the 2007 Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly elections the BNP fielded candidates. In the Welsh elections the party fielded 20 candidates, four in each of the five regional lists with party chairman Nick Griffin standing in the South Wales West region.[50] It received large numbers of votes, coming fifth behind the major parties in some areas. They did best in north east Wales, polling 9% in Wrexham and 7% in both Alyn and Deeside and in Clwyd South. However, they did not get any seats in the Welsh assembly.
In the Scottish Parliament election the party fielded 32 candidates which entitled the BNP to public funding for its campaign and an election broadcast, something which was attacked by far left groups.[51] The BNP got about 1% of the vote and no seats.
In the UK local elections which took place on the same day as the Scottish and Welsh elections, the BNP fielded a record 754 council candidates, more than double the number the previous year.[52] It won increased support in Windsor and Maidenhead but did not increase its number of councillors in Sandwell from 4 and saw its seats in Burnley reduced from seven to four. It won both Hugglescote and Whitick - the first seats to be won by the BNP in Leicestershire.

In a nail-biting moment the final result for Rosegrove with Lowerhouse hinged on the drawing of lots, leaving the BNP with three less seats.
Council officials were forced to draw lots after Labour's Paul Reynolds and BNP's Peter Rowe got 489 votes each with Paul reynolds winning the draw to the exuberant cheers of his Labour colleagues.
...
Teacher Anne Kelly, took the seat from the BNP's Shirley Thompson in her home ward of Briercliffe with a majority of 559 votes, and said the people were turning away from the BNP.
She said: "I am delighted to have taken this ward.
"Some of the win was down to the fact that I have been a parish councillor there for 13 years.
"The BNP have not done anything positive for the people of Briercliffe and this is why we have made some in roads into the wards."

BARROW voters sent a message of rejection to the British National Party yesterday.
BNP candidate Mike Ashburner finished last in the race for Central Ward.
The far-right organisation - standing for the first time in Barrow - claimed their 100 votes as a victory, but opposition parties say they were shown the door.

BNP are out following last nights elections at Broxbourne Borough Council.
The British National Party (BNP) lost their only seat, held in the Rosedale ward, to a Labour candidate after local elections yesterday.

SENIOR councillors in Leeds were today locked in a bitter political row following local election results which saw the ruling Liberal Democrat-Conservative-Green alliance lose its overall majority.
The coalition lost three seats and now has 49 of the authority's 99 seats. Labour made gains in Garforth, Gipton and Harehills and Temple Newsam to move up to 43 seats.
...
The British National Party failed to add to the seat it won last year.
The political make-up of the council now is Labour 43, Liberal Democrats 24, Conservatives 22, Morley Borough Independents 5, Greens 3, Independent 1 and BNP 1.
The overall voting turnout across the city of Leeds was 37.52 per cent, one of the highest turnouts in recent years.
Labour won 32.5 per cent of the vote; Conservatives won 26.8 per cent; Lib Dems won 19.6 per cent; BNP won 11.1 per cent and Green won 3.9 per cent of the votes.

The hate-filled BNP failed to make any headway - in a major victory for the Mirror's Hope Not Hate campaign against racism.
The Tories gained more than 860 seats, mostly in the blue heartlands of the South, with only a handful in more affluent areas of the Midlands and North. They failed to win key target seats such as Bury and Bolton.
Labour was toppled by the Tories in Blackpool, which was seen as a protest vote against the government after the UK's first supercasino went to Manchester. But the national picture means there is still no threat of a thumping Tory revival even though the political map has changed locally.

Ross Henning also hung on to his place in the council, taking the Calne Abberd ward ahead of Conservative Roy Golding.
He praised people in the town for steering clear of the British National Party, whose candidate, Robert Baggs, gained just 91 of the 699 votes.
"The people in Calne are a sensible bunch and they have not gone off half-cocked to the far right,"he said.
The BNP put forward four candidates, in the Corsham and Lacock, Box and Rudloe, Calne Abberd and Pickwick wards, finishing dead last in three.
BNP member Michael Simpkins, who has become a Corsham Town Councillor, finished second last in the Box and Rudloe ward.
He said: "ts not about winning seats at this stage, its about becoming acceptable."

Don't patronise the electorate
By Reader's letter
THE strong message given out by the Archbishop of York, urging people not to vote BNP, plus your wide coverage (BNP sparks alert from Archbishop, The Press, May 1) would have reached the eyes and ears of many prospective voters.
Voting is the democratic right of each adult citizen and, equally, it is a very personal matter. Also, people are, in my opinion, sick and tired of being patronised and told by the authorities, and those in high-profile offices, what they can and what they cannot do.
The people of York are quite capable, and intelligent enough, to make up their own minds who they want to represent them in local government.

I can understand Dr Sentamu's sentiments. His country (Uganda) is similar in many ways to my own (Papua New Guinea).
In particular, the racist regime suffered by the citizens of my country was appalling, and these practices continued up to, and even after, independence in 1975.
Be that as it may, I still feel people should be free to have a clear mind and elect the candidate of their choice. After all, the BNP is a legal entity, and it does have a charter to field candidates in an election.
You can change the law easily enough, but not the way people think.

Brian Allen, the BNP's candidate in Currock, said he would have won but for hostile press coverage in the run up to yesterday's poll.
He said: "Everybody mobilised against us and we still came second.
"It has just made us stronger. We will be back."
