「20世紀のスピーチ」特集＠ガーディアン

先日から、ガーディアンが、「20世紀の名演説」のブックレットを付録につけるというキャンペーンをやっている。そればかりか、そのブックレットの内容をウェブで無料公開している。基本的に、それぞれ音声も聞けるし、スクリプトも読めるようになっている（いくつかの例外あり）。スクリプトのページにはYouTubeの映像へのリンクがはられているものもある。また、毎回「解説者」が解説を書いているのだが、この「解説者」がけっこう豪華だったりもする。

No 1: Winston Churchill（ウィンストン・チャーチル）
1940年６月４日の英国会演説（第二次大戦での戦時内閣首相としての非常に勇ましい演説。最後のほうの、"we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender" というのがけっこう知られていると思う）。

No 2: John F Kennedy（ジョン・Ｆ・ケネディ）
言わずもがな、1961年１月のあの就任演説（「国が君のために何をではなく、君が国のために何を」）。

No 3: Nelson Mandela（ネルソン・マンデラ）
1964年４月20日、最高裁判所の被告人席から。マンデラはこの裁判で終身刑になっている。解説を書いているのはデクラーク元大統領。

No 4: Harold Macmillan（ハロルド・マクミラン）
The wind of change speechとして知られる1960年２月の南アでの演説。アパルトヘイト反対を訴えた。

No 5: Franklin D Roosevelt（フランクリン・ローズヴェルト／ルーズベルト）
FDRは大統領を２期務めたが、この演説は１期目（「ニューディール」政策）の就任演説＠1933年３月。解説を書いているのはゴードン・ブラウン財務相。

No 6: Nikita Khrushchev（ニキータ・フルシチョフ）
1956年２月、共産党大会での演説。スターリン批判。スクリプトは英訳（抄訳）。解説を書いているのはゴルバチョフ元大統領。音声なし。

No 7: Emmeline Pankhurst（エメリン・パンクハースト）
1913年11月の「わたくしは啓発者としてここに来たのではなく、みなさまに説明する任務を負った闘士としてここに立っています」という演説。音声なし。

No 8: Martin Luther King
言わずもがな、1963年８月28日、ワシントン大行進のときの「私には夢がある」演説。

・・・というわけで、私が通して読んだこと／聞いたことのある演説はチャーチル（読んだ）、ケネディ（読んだし聞いた）、キング牧師（勉強の教材として一部を暗記した）だけだ。フルシチョフの演説は内容だけは「ソ連史概説」みたいなので知ってはいたけれども、文面を見るのも初めてである。これらのほかに誰のどの演説が紹介されるのか、楽しみだ。ガーディアンのサイトのバナーにはJFKとマンデラとパンクハーストのほかにネルーの顔があるから、ネルーはこの先のラインナップに入っていることは確定。

５月５日のガーディアン紙には、10の演説の音声を抜粋したCDがついてくるとのことだから、残り６演説のうち４つは音声の存在するもの（あまり古くなく、英語でのもの）と考えておいていいのかな。

個人的には、2005年にノーベル文学賞を受賞したときのハロルド・ピンターのレクチャー（下記集英社新書で日本語で読めます）が入っていることを期待したい。

The "special relationship" between the USA and the United Kingdom has, in the last twelve years, brought about the deaths of thousands upon thousands of people in Iraq, Afghanistan and Serbia. All this in pursuit of the American and British "moral crusade", to bring "peace and stability to the world".

The use of depleted uranium in the Gulf War has been particularly effective. Radiation levels in Iraq are appallingly high. Babies are born with no brain, no eyes, no genitals. Where they do have ears, mouths or rectums, all that issues from these orifices is blood. Blair and Bush are of course totally indifferent to such facts, not forgetting the charming, grinning, beguiling Bill Clinton, who was apparently given a standing ovation at the Labour Party Conference. For what? Killing Iraqi children? Or Serbian children?

Bush has said: "We will not allow the worlds worst weapons to remain in the hands of the worlds worst leaders". Quite right. Look in the mirror chum. That's you.

本日、東京の天気が下り坂なのは、昨日ガーディアンのスピーチ特集の「10日目」の人物の名を私が心の中で唱えたからだ。そうに違いない。

11日目はネルーです。1947年８月、インド国民議会での演説。音声あり。

The title "Women and Fiction" might mean, and you may have meant it to mean, women and what they are like, or it might mean women and the fiction that they write, or it might mean women and the fiction that is written about them, or it might mean that somehow all three are inextricably mixed together and you want me to consider them in that light. But when I began to consider the subject in this last way, which seemed the most interesting, I soon saw that it had one fatal drawback: I should never be able to come to a conclusion.

ヴァージニア・ウルフは講演でも「意識の流れ」な感じなので（？）ちょっと読みづらい。

13日目、Aneurin Bevan、って誰だろうと思ったら「ベヴァニズム」のNye Bevanですね。労働党の大物、NHS創設や国有化の時の内閣の主要人物。「伝説の名演説家」のような人だそうです。

スピーチは1956年12月、国会でのもの。（Extracted from Hansard 5th December 1956. Columns 1268 - 1283だそうです。）つまりスエズ危機（＝第二次中東戦争）真っ最中、Labourは野党（政権は保守党、首相はイーデン）。

ハンサードの抜粋は文脈知らずに読むのはきついのですが、これは特に厳しい。10月とか11月のことが下敷になっているのだけれども、スエズ危機についてそんな月単位でのこと把握してないんで、何を話しているのかすらはっきりとはわからない。

One does not fire in order merely to have a cease-fire. One would have thought that the cease-fire was consequent upon having fired in the first place. It could have been accomplished without starting.

文脈から切り離してしまうと「アフォリズム」めいて見えるけれども。

大トリはアール・スペンサー。ダイアナさんの弟のスペンサー伯ですね。スピーチはもちろん、ダイアナさんの葬儀のときのもの。音声あり。

14のスピーチのラインアップを見て「英国らしい」というか「ガーディアンらしい」というか、その両方の印象。

日本の新聞社やテレビ局でも「日本の名演説10選」とかやればいいのに。「自分探し」をしている現代日本にはちょうどいいと思うのだけれど。「所得倍増計画」とか「日本列島改造論」とか、私もちゃんと聞いてみたい。リアルタイムでは知らないから。
