PUPのDavid Ervine危篤

PUPのDavid Ervineが急に倒れて「病院に搬送された」という記事を今から10時間ほど前に見たのだが、今、もう一度見てみたら、「病院で危篤」という見出しになっている。

リトビネンコ事件のおかげで「急に倒れて病院に搬送」というのにやたらと過敏になっているのだが、BBCの記事には、何ら詳しいことが書かれていないので状況がまったくわからない。通常、こういうときは「脳卒中で」とか「心臓に痛みを覚え」とか「高血圧の持病があり」といったことが書かれていることが多いのだが、それもない。書かれているのは、最初に入院した病院から、ICUの設備のあるRoyal Victoria Hospitalに転院し、現在はICUに入っている、ということだけだ。（あとはピーター・ヘインらの言葉、など。）

RTE記事では「心臓発作と思われる」とある。

スラオさん記事のコメント欄によると、一時「死亡」情報が流れたようだ（＠RTE）。これはすぐに撤回された。

倒れたときの様子が書き足されている。いわく：

Mr Ervine, 53, was taken to hospital after suffering a heart attack at his home on Sunday. He later had a stroke and a brain haemorrhage in hospital.

つまり、日曜日に自宅で心臓発作をおこして倒れた。その後、搬送された病院で卒中と脳内出血。そこで地域病院では設備がないので、大病院のICUに運び込まれたと思われる。

北アイルランド担当大臣のピーター・ヘインのコメント：

Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain told the BBC he had "a high regard for him".

"He's brought loyalist politics a considerable distance, he's a very progressive unionist, wants to see power-sharing work and I hope he's going to be part of that."

本当だ。本当にそうだ。あと３ヶ月もしないうちに、自治政府が動き出すだろうというのに、今倒れるなんて。。。

David Ervineは左派系ロイヤリスト（「労働者階級の利益」のためのロイヤリズムがProgressive Unionism）で、元「テロリスト」。19歳でUVFに入る。1972年の「ブラッディ・フライデー」（IRAがベルファストで波状攻撃、爆弾21個で死者９人、重傷者130人）に怒り、1974年に自動車爆弾攻撃を仕掛けようとしたところを逮捕・投獄（ロング・ケッシュ）、1980年に出所し、その後政治家に転身。地方議会を経て、1998年にMLAに当選。1998年のグッドフライデー合意（ベルファスト合意）を強力に後押ししたユニオニストのリーダーのひとり。2003年の選挙でもMLAとして当選。2003年の選挙ではDUPが躍進してUUPとPUPは後退したはずだが、PUPはこの１議席しか持ってないはず。（＜記憶に頼る。）

「元テロリスト」で「政治家」で、「テロの専門家（元インサイダー）」としての経験と知識を生かしてテレビ番組にコメンテイターとして出演することもある。確か、2005/07/07のロンドンの爆弾テロのときも、テレビでコメントしてたような気がする（ストリーミングで見た記憶が）。ただ、UVFの武装解除を推し進める方向で動かなかったことでの批判は強い。本人、結局今もUVFのメンバーシップは持っているらしいし。。。最近は、数合わせのために党を移籍するとかしないとかで（PUPからUUPに）ごたごたしていた。

まだ53歳だ。若すぎる。それにグッドフライデー合意は、あとほんの３ヶ月で形になる（はずだ）。こんな突然倒れるなんて、むごい。

He has encouraged his community to separate politics from religion and to support a modern form of non-sectarian unionism "free from the Pope, the Queen and King Billy".

Despite many doubts in the Protestant community about the Good Friday Agreement, Mr Ervine has said he believes it represents a good deal for unionism.

In the lengthy controversy about the decommissioning of paramilitary weapons, he acknowledged the difficulties faced by the IRA in handing over its guns and explosives.

But he also called on the republican organisation to make clear it did not intend to return to war. Greater flexibility, he seemed to suggest, would open the way for the creation of a cabinet or executive including Sinn Fein, with the possibility of a handover of weapons at a later date.
