2006年、「わけわからん大賞」

毎年恒例のアレでございます。（発表されたのはかなり前ですが。。。）

英Plain English CampaignのFoot in Mouth Awardこと「わけわからん大賞」、本年の受賞者はスーパー・モデルのナオミ・キャンベルさんの次の発言です！

"I love England, especially the food. There's nothing I like more than a lovely bowl of pasta."

「英国が大好き、特に食べ物が」というのは好みの問題ですので、他人がとやかく言えるものではありません。しかし、パスタは英国の料理ではありません。また、「英国のパスタがこの上もなく大好き」という人は、私の知る限り、初めてです。（英国のパスタは、基本的に、アルデンテを15分前に通り過ぎたような代物で、味噌煮込みのうどんは芯が残っとらんと許せんとゆー味覚の持ち主にとっては「かつてパスタであったはずのもの」でしかありません。）

でもこの発言、言語としては極めて明瞭で、意味もそれなりにはっきりしているし、foot in mouth感が薄いですね。（単に何も考えずにぼけーっとしてしゃべってたんじゃないのか、という感じ。）

ＰＥＣの「わけわからん大賞」は、2002年にはリチャード・ギアさん（俳優）の「もしも私がヘビならば……」、2003年にはドナルド・ラムズフェルドさん（米国防長官）の "there things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns"、2004年はボリス・ジョンソンさん（英保守党国会議員）の "I could not fail to disagree with you less"、2005年はRhodri Morganさん（ウェールズ自治政府ファースト・ミニスター）の "The only thing which isn't up for grabs is no change and I think it's fair to say it's all to play for, except for no change" に与えられています。「わけわからん」といってもいろいろですが、言語として最もfoot in mouthっぽいのはやはりラム爺とボリス・ジョンソンですね。この２者は甲乙つけがたい。さすが、インテリは違いますなぁ。はっはっは。

もうひとつ、「単語・文構造難解度満点、そのほか佳作」（Golden Bull Award）は、今年は：

Wheale, Thomas, Hodgins plc for a job advertisement

Fife Council for a letter about a change to bin collection dates

Your bin will be emptied week beginning the 20th March 2006, then next collection would not be until the week beginning the 10th April 2006. Thus having to wait 3 weeks for collection.

Therefore we are to provide a normal collection on your normal collection day, week starting the 3rd April and again on your new collection date, week starting the 10th April then there after every 2 weeks.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies for a website document description

ファイフのごみ収集告知、これはすごい。ほんとにわけわかんない。どうしたらいいの？　いつもどおりに出してＯＫなの？（笑）

ほかのもすごいのがそろっているけど、CCOIのは語彙の問題だよね。。。英検１級ってこんな感じ？（＜イメージ：笑）

なんかの会社の求人広告は、メモみたいだなあ。

Fiscal Studiesのは読めなくはないけど、長すぎる。つーか私が英語で何かを書くと、ときどきこういう感じになる。（笑）いや、ここまで高度ではないけど、書き足し書き足し、あらま主語がおかしいじゃないのとかやった末に、気づくとこういう調子になってることがある。しかもそういう文はたいがい「三単現のs」とかでミスってる。で、最初から書き直す。。。

法律に関連する２件のはよくわかりません。法律はだいたいこんな感じでは、と思うのだけど、noticeってのが問題なんだろうな。

ただ、ガーディアンのジャーメイン・グリアはどうかな。。。自身でこの受賞に反論してましたね。unsynthesised manifoldというのが受賞理由だったのですが、これは哲学（美学）用語だ！と。ガーディアンの美術欄のインテリが書いた評論の記事なんて誰もが読解できなければならないものじゃないのだから、PECもほっとけばいいのに、と私は思いました。

にも読者ご意見が。

本来PECが対象としているのは、誰にでもはっきりわからなければならないお役所の文書のわけわかんない言葉づかい（まさに上のファイフの例のような）なのですが、今年はなんか、「わけのわかんないもの」の揚げ足取りのようで、あんまりおもしろくないですね。「言語」と「意味」の境界線がぐだぐだになっているというか。。。

なお、PECではもちろん「すばらしくわかりやすい」ものについても賞を出しています。英語の勉強のために読むものを探している人は、PECの「すばらしい」系のものを見てみるのもよいかも。ウェブサイトでの受賞はHM Prison Serviceです。

ところで、今年のPECの「わけわからん大賞」のナオミ・キャンベルのを見て、故竹下元首相の「言語明瞭、意味不明」を思い出して検索してみたら、ロシア・東欧研究の塩川伸明さんのエッセイ（1996年執筆）がヒットしました。文中で紹介されている吉田秀和の文は、私も覚えています。
