マイケル・ストーンの「手紙」

マイケル・ストーンの襲撃未遂事件について、いろいろとわかってきたようだ。

まず、26日のオブザーバーで「ストーンの計画をしったUDAが、ヒットスクワッドを派遣してストーンを追った」という報道があったのですが：

それから、マイケル・ストーンが何をするつもりだったのかが、ベル・テレさんあてのストーンの手紙で明らかになったり。

Loyalist killer Michael Stone's former paramilitary associates had no advance warning of his attempted bomb attack on Stormont, they claimed tonight.

The terror organisation also rejected reports that it despatched four carloads of UDA men to intercept, arrest or shoot Stone on Friday as he travelled to Stormont...

The statement said: "The Ulster Defence Association had no prior knowledge of Stone's intention and it is becoming increasingly clear that he acted alone."

The UDA said he had been accepted and supported by its ex-prisoner community after he was freed from the Maze Prison. It offered him what limited resources were available to them at the time, the statement said.

It added: "He was content for a period to work within this reintegration process.

"But for the past two years he became estranged, wishing to pursue issues of truth and reconciliation, engaging with (Archbishop) Desmond Tutu and wishing to engage with other ex-combatants in the republican community.

"This organisation was not ready for this type of development and Michael has since become more reclusive and withdrawn.

"Due to the lack of resources available to ex-prisoners' groups they were unable to deliver a comprehensive programme that could help people like Michael."

もうちょっと勘弁してくださいってのが第一印象。自称、freelance-dissident loyalist paramilitaryが「壮烈な戦死」を夢想している書き物。ロビーに爆弾もどき（煙と音を出すもの）を投げ込んで警告を叫び（一般人を退避させる）、議場に乱入して・・・という計画。ターゲットは「戦犯」のアダムズとマクギネス。

Gerry Adams and Martin (The Fisherman) McGuinness. These despots retain their leadership positions within the Irish Republican Armies Ruling Council. An organization that has terrorized the protestant -- Unionist populace of Ulster for thirty-five years.

ストーンは言う。IRAは35年にわたり、プロテスタントに対してテロを続けてきた、と。

まったく、よく言うよね。

ちょうど今日、IOLに記事が出ていた。1975年のある事件に関連するものだ。

1975年７月、アイルランドのバンド（Miami Showbandという名前）が、プロテスタントのテロ組織、UVF（UDR＝英軍の服装をしていた）に襲われた。UVFはこのバンドを「IRAのセル」ということにする工作をしかけたが、バンド車に爆弾を仕掛けている最中に爆弾が爆発、UVFのメンバーが２人死亡。破れかぶれにでもなったのか、UVFはバンドのリードシンガーら３人を射殺した。

Miami Showbandは当時アイルランドで最も人気のあったライヴバンドだった。映画『プルートで朝食を』の前半に出てくるバンドのように、ボーダーを越えて南北を行き来するバンドで、当日はCo Downのライヴをしたところだったそうだ。彼らのライヴではプロテスタントもカトリックもなく人々が楽しんでいて、それをUVFは快く思っていなかったという話もある。

つまりね、戦争屋なのだよ。それで儲けはしないかもしれないけど（だから軍産複合体を「戦争屋」と呼ぶのとはちょっと意味が違うか）、「紛争」を、「暴力」を継続させることに、自分のレーゾンデートルをかけている。
