Bloody Sunday anniversary marked

Well shit happens and I'll do nothing but copy and pasting. Shame 'cause it's Bloody Sunday's 40th anniversary. All the words melted away before I could type or write them down because of those who don't care in the least about the Troubles and who think they have the right to discuss something with me, forcing me to use my own time and energy. And then the words are gone and lost forever. Fuckin' hell. I've been preparing for this anniversary since June 2010, and the opportunity has been lost, or ruined, by those ********* *******ers - I can't find any suitable words sorry.

Kate Nash, whose brother William (19) was shot dead on the day and whose father Alexander was wounded, said she has no dispute with the family members of the victims who opted not to march.

“I haven’t fallen out with any of the families who are not with us today. I respect their decision not to attend and I’m sure they in turn respect my decision to march. My hope is that this march will continue to highlight many other injustices perpetrated against innocent people whoever they might be and wherever they might be. They too are entitled to justice for their loved ones,” she said.

Michael McKinney, whose brother William was one of the 13 victims, said there had been differences of opinion among the Bloody Sunday families for some time.

“I am speaking personally, not for anyone else. I believe this march should continue until justice is truly seen to be done for all the victims.

More than one hundred relatives of those killed and wounded on Bloody Sunday have signed a letter supporting the decision not to hold a march to mark the 40th anniversary of the massacre.

The signatories of the letter have said the move was prompted by “public confusion” over a separate march being organised by some of the relatives, as well as a number of the wounded.

The programme of events to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the massacre includes a lecture, remembrance Mass, human rights event, and a gathering at the monument on Rossville Street - but does not include a march as the majority of families decided that last year’s march would be the last.

The decision was made after a number of meetings held in the city last year.

The letter signed by the families, printed in today’s ‘Journal,’ states: “We declared last year that the 39th Anniversary should be the last annual Bloody Sunday March. This is still our belief.”

Members of a number of the Bloody Sunday families, however, have organised a march, which is planned for Sunday, January 29th, from Central Drive to Free Derry Corner.

The signatories of today’s letter have said they believe “the time for protest has passed” and, as a result, they will not be marching to mark the 40th anniversary.

The families said the emphasis of this year’s commemorations will be ongoing efforts to highlight the case of Gerard Donaghey.

“The Bloody Sunday Trust & Bloody Sunday Weekend Committee have organised a programme of events to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, including a Memorial Service at the Bloody Sunday Memorial at 1.00pm on Sunday 29 January to which all are invited, the annual Bloody Sunday lecture, the memorial Mass, and a range of other events,” the letter states.

The families’ letter also thanked the people of Derry for their support over the four decades since the massacre.

Members of Sinn Féin as well as members of the SDLP attended yesterday’s march and rally alongside members of the dissident republican group the 32 County Sovereignty Movement. Also in attendance was Kieran Dowling, the Irish Government’s joint head of the British-Irish secretariat in Belfast.

Mr McCann also said that "on balance", he felt that a controversial march to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Bloody Sunday march should have been included in the official programme of events.

Thousands of people attended the event on Sunday, which was organised by some of the families of those who died on Bloody Sunday.

The majority of the families said they did not want to take part after what they considered to be the final march last year, following the publication of the findings of the Bloody Sunday Inquiry.

"I think it would have been reasonable to include it," he said.

"But it is also reasonable to say, of course, that the organisers of the week were entitled to decide what should go into the programme and to decide what should go into it whether I or anyone else disagrees with it."

Too short an article. Shame. Just think about how much has he given to Derry's media as the Trust chair? And only this? Maybe they're shocked too. Well.

I hope he'll keep on fighting (with words) as he did before the Saville Report came out in 2010.
