Irish president Michael D Higgins admitted last night he was homesick for Galway and found it tough to settle in to Aras an Uachtarain.

Mr Higgins said he left the City of the Tribes "suddenly" after the presidential election.

昨晩（行われたインタビューで）アイルランド共和国のマイケル・D・ヒギンズ大統領は、（拠点としてきた）ゴールウェイを離れてホームシックになっていると率直なところを述べ、（ダブリンの）大統領公邸はなかなか自分の家だという気がしないと述べた。ヒギンズ大統領は、大統領選挙の結果、「急に」ゴールウェイを離れたものですから、と語った。

……その後の世論調査では労働党のベテランと、『マネーの虎』の対決、という様相を呈してきた。選挙戦が進むにつれて、『マネーの虎』は支持を伸ばし、労働党のベテランを追い抜いて、世論調査ではトップに躍り出るまでになった。

しかし、最後の最後にIRAがシン・フェインがぶっぱなしたRPGは一撃は、この『虎』を粉砕したのである……！

てなわけで、選挙戦終盤になって、マーティン・マクギネス（シン・フェイン、写真右）が、当選確実視されていた『マネーの虎』ことショーン・ギャラハー（元フィオナ・フォイル、写真左）のスキャンダルを突然暴いたので、選挙戦では第二位につけていた「労働党のベテラン」ことマイケル・Ｄ・ヒギンズ（写真真ん中）が当選した、という顛末で、当方、お茶ふきっぱなし。

でもマイケル・Dはとても立派な人で、就任式のスピーチもとても感動的で、いつもは言葉はイマイチなエンダ・ケニー首相のとてもよくて……詳細下記。

が、これがバッファリングが頻繁すぎて全然聞けないので、RTE（国営放送）のYTのクリップで。



スクリプトが見つからないのだけど（部分的なものならあるのだが）、非常に聞き取りやすいので大丈夫だろう。現在、アイルランドはfree stateからrepublicになって以来、おそらく最も深刻な危機にある。その「危機」を真正面からとらえ、マイケル・Dらしく射程の深い、なおかつ手堅くまとまったスピーチだ。

で、アイルランド大統領府のサイトはパーマリンクとかがかなりぐだぐだなのだが（やっぱり米国や英国の行政府のサイトの作り方は、ものすごくきれいだと思う。欧州ではこのくらいにぐだぐだでも、特に例外的ではない……何年か前の調べ物での感想）、現状、トップページに、故ヴァーツラフ・ハヴェルへの追悼の辞が出ている。これがまた、同じ時代を生きた「文人」同士、「人権蹂躙への抵抗」の活動を続けていた同志同士……。

Statement from Áras an Uachtaráin, on the death of Vaclav Havel

President Michael D. Higgins said, "It is with deep sadness that I have heard of the death of Vaclav Havel, the former President of the Czech Republic.

I was in correspondence with him in recent weeks but I also have the warmest memories of his visit to Ireland during my time as Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht and the great appreciation there was for his contributions, at the Irish Writers' Centre, on the responsibility of the intellectual in politics.

Through the inspiration of Vaclav's words, the courage of his dissidence and the integrity of his leadership, Czechoslovakia successfully transitioned from an authoritarian state to a free democracy at the heart of Europe.

He also ensured that the later separation of the Czech Republic and Slovakia was achieved peacefully and without compromising democratic values.

Even after he stepped down as President, the moral influence of Vaclav's life and words continued to inspire those around the world who struggle for the protection of human rights, care for the maintenance of democratic values and the indispensability of human dignity.

However, his later reflections on the role of the artist and intellectual in the public world are among the best of what has been written in the search for a moral connection between politics, economic and social life.

While realising the necessity and promise of a Europe at peace he also expressed his anxiety at a project that might descend to a bureaucracy that betrayed its promise and the vision of its founders.

His loyalty to those with whom he shared a love of theatre continued to the end and reveals the importance he attached to the values of a friendship that was based on a shared interest in the spirituality of the arts.

On my own behalf and behalf of the Irish people, I extend sincere condolences to President Klaus and to the Czech people"
