Despite the fact that civil partnerships are recognised under UK law, the government made legal submissions to the European court of human rights arguing that Austria should not have an obligation to provide the same rights to same-sex couples there. The move is at odds with its own professed commitment to equality for lesbians, gay and bisexual people, which saw the UK become one of only three European countries to recognise same-sex relationships under the 2004 Civil Partnership Act.

つまり、「これからはレズビアンであろうともゲイであろうともバイセクシュアルであろうとも、平等の権利を」という「運動」の先頭に立って自国では2004年の「シヴィル・パートナー法」で事実上の「同性結婚」を制度的に認めた英国が、同じ口で、欧州人権裁判所に対して「オーストリアは別にやらなくてもいいんじゃないですか」という見解を示している、と。

……というのはやや「煽り」が入っていますが（原文の段階から）、詳細はガーディアン記事をお読みください。

元々は「同じEUの英国で認められているのになぜオーストリアではだめなのか」という主旨での訴えで、英国が介入することが上院で止められたというのが発端のようです。

そして言語関係で興味深いのは、英国が2004年の「シヴィル・パートナー法」で生物学的男性と男性、または生物学的女性と女性のカップルの「夫婦のような関係」を法で認めたときに、「結婚 marriage」という言葉を使わず、「パートナー partner」という言葉を使ったことについて、ぶっちゃけられている点。ブレアのニューレイバーがどのように「保守派」を説得したか、ということですが。

However, the government ... has told the court that the right to marry refers to "the traditional marriage between persons of the opposite biological sex ... There is not an evolving convergence to the effect that persons in a same-sex relationship should be allowed to contract a marriage."
しかしながら、英国政府は欧州人権裁判所に対し、結婚をする権利とは、「生物学的に両性である人たちの間での伝統的な結婚のことを言う……同性間の関係にある人たちが結婚の契約を許可されるべきだという点での意見の一致はない」と述べている。

UK law on civil partnerships provides legal recognition that is "very similar" to marriage, Lord Bach told the House of Lords last month, "but [the law] did not call those partnerships marriage, and that remains government policy".

William "Willy" Stephen Goulden Bach, Baron Bach (born 25 December 1946) is a British Labour member of the House of Lords and currently a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry of Justice replacing Lord Hunt of Kings Heath.

Bach was educated at Westminster School and then New College, Oxford, before being called to the Bar in 1972. He served as a barrister and a local councillor in Leicester, and was made Head of Chambers at King Street Chambers in Leicester on the Midland Circuit in 1996.

つまり、いいとこの坊ちゃんで、労働党で、職業としては弁護士（バリスター）。どっかで聞いたような……っていうよりある意味「典型」ですね、労働党エリートの。地方行政に長く携わり、国政には上院で初めて関わり（1999年）、軍事・防衛の調達の要職を経て、現在は司法（Ministry of Justice）。

を見ると、ゲイライツ推進には大賛成の投票行動だそうです。でも異性間の「結婚」と同じものは同性間には認めない、と。（これは意外でもなんでもないことですが。）
