カラジッチがハーグの法廷に立った。本格的に始まるのは8月29日だ。それまでのおよそ1ヶ月、カラジッチは法廷の準備を行なう。カラジッチはハーグで弁護士は立てず、自分で自分の弁護をすることにしている。

He faces 11 counts of genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and other atrocities in the Bosnian war of the 1990s.

The charges relate to several events, including his alleged part in the July 1995 shelling of Sarajevo during the city's siege, in which some 12,000 civilians died.

He is also alleged to have organised the massacre of up to 8,000 Bosniak men and youths in Srebrenica as part of a campaign to "terrorise and demoralise the Bosnian Muslim and Bosnian Croat population".

When asked whether he had any issues to raise, Mr Karadzic said he wanted to inform the judge about irregularities about his transfer to tribunal. He said he had been seized and held by "unknown civilians" for three days before the official arrest date given to the court.

He said his rights were denied him - even the opportunity to telephone or text friends who may have been searching for him in hospitals or mortuaries.

確か月曜日に逮捕だと発表されたのだけれど、実は金曜日に逮捕されていたという説も出ていて、どうやらそれは「金曜日」で正しかったようだ。そして密かに拘束されていた3日間は、外部との連絡が一切できなかった――「友人たちが心配して探していたかもしれないのに」。（こいつがこういうことを言うと無性にイラつくのは私の人間ができてないからですね。）

で、こういう非正規の手続がとられたことを理由にカラジッチは抵抗を試みるだろうし、そこからほころびが出ると、ICCの最初の戦犯裁判(DRC, Thomas Lubanga被告)が失敗したようなことにもなりかねない――可能性は低いにしても。

これはカラジッチの法廷作戦であると同時に、今のセルビア政府に対してプレッシャーをかけているのではないかという気がする。つまり、まだ逃亡中のムラジッチについてだ。

それと、冒頭陳述で大演説をしたというのだが、これもなあ……。

Mr Karadzic wanted to read out a four-page speech which included details about an alleged deal with the former US ambassador to the United Nations Richard Holbrooke for him to withdraw from public and literary life.

Mr Karadzic said he had wanted to appear before the tribunal when first indicted in 1996 - but was in fear of being "liquidated" if he did so, under the terms of the "deal".

The judge stopped him and said these were not matters for the initial hearing and he would get ample opportunity to explain them to the tribunal.

Mr Holbrooke later told the BBC that Mr Karadzic's claims were "laughably ludicrous".

カラジッチがああいうふうな潜伏方法を取っていたからよけいに「見世物」めいた方向に拍車がかかって、私も「ビフォー・アフター」とかやっているけれども、仮にカラジッチがああいう化け方をしていなかったとしても同じように「見世物」化していただろう。今回それが大きく見えるのは、カラジッチが予想外の形でベオグラードに潜伏していたということがセンセーショナルだからだ。

もうひとつ。ボスニア・ヘルツェゴビナの大統領評議会議長（主要3民族の持ち回り）であるムスリムのハリス・シライジッチ博士が、BBCのアラビア語サービスの取材に応えて次のように述べている。これについては私はちょっとよくわからないので（基礎知識がないので）、機会があれば調べるということでメモしておく。

He said the conditions and ideology that surrounded Mr Karadzic were still alive and in evidence.

"Radovan Karadzic established the Serbian republic in Bosnia and Herzegovina based on genocide, collective displacement, ethnic cleansing and so on," he said.

"What would satisfy people in Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as international justice... is to see the constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina amended, and to overcome the consequences of genocide."
