かつてロンドンで、教科書に載ってた通りの「英語のお決まりフレーズ」がいかに「丸暗記」に過ぎないものであるか、現地の人（属性はAnarcho Punk）から教えられた。「こういうのを『生きてる英語』っていうのね」とお目目キラキラでいられるほどの余裕がない場合には、自分の知識が「丸暗記」に過ぎないということをリアルに思い知らされるのは、けっこうきついものだ。ともあれ、そういう「生きてる英語」のひとつとしてはっきり覚えているのが、canとmayの違いである。
うちらの世代は、中学んときに、英語の教科書でもテストでも、Can I 〜? = May I 〜? と、あたかも常に置換可能なように習ってきたと思う。どちらも「相手に許可を求める」ときのお決まりフレーズだが、実際には常に置換可能ではない。「失礼してタバコを一服してもよろしいですか」は "Can I smoke?" ではなく "May I smoke?" という。授業中やテスト中に急にトイレに行きたくなったときは、"May I go to the toilet[bathroom]?" であって、"Can I go to the toilet?" ではない。どちらも、 "Of course you can, but you may not." という返答がありうるのである。

Perhaps it should be changed - "can" probably means "it's possible to", rather than "you may" or "you are allowed to", but it can be taken either way. Given that that's where most people would go to get the "official" line, that's where it needs to be clarified.
