BBC記事にあるジェリー・アダムズの「お悔やみのことば」よりも、indymedia.ieやpolitics.ieに投稿されている一般の人々のことばを読んだ方が、この人がどういう「存在」だったかがはっきりとわかるだろう。
ブレンダン・ヒューズは、1980年10月、北アイルランドのメイズ刑務所（ロング・ケッシュ）で、「政治犯」としての待遇（一般犯罪者と同じ「囚人服」ではなく私私服の着用）を求めて、リパブリカン（Provisional IRAとINLA）が行なったハンガーストライキ（第一次ハンスト）のときの、メイズのIRAの司令官（Officer Commanding: OC）だった。
第一次ハンストは、サッチャー政権側からの条件提示があったことと、ハンガーストライカーのひとりが昏睡状態に陥ったことで、53日目に打ち切られた。その打ち切りの判断をしたのもヒューズだった。（なお、このときの政権側からの「条件提示」は相手のことば尻を取ったような形で一見相手の要求を飲んだかのように思わせるものだった。）
後にヒューズはこのハンストの経験を次のように回想している。
You lose the fat first. Then your muscles start to go and your mind eats off the muscles, the glucose in your muscles and you can feel yourself going. You can actually smell yourself rotting away. That was one of the most memorable things for me: the smell, the smell of almost death from your own body... Your body starts to eat itself. I mean that's basically what happens during the hunger strike, until the point where there's no fat left, no muscles left, your body then starts to eat off your brain. And that's when your senses start to go. Your eyesight goes, your hearing goes, all your senses start to go when the body starts to eat off the brain.
大意：
まず脂肪が落ちる。それから筋肉が落ち始める。精神活動が筋肉を食う。筋肉内のブドウ糖が頭に回される。そして自分が死ぬということが感じられる。実際に、自分の身体が朽ちていくのがにおいでわかる。最も強く記憶に残っていることのひとつが、そのにおいだ。自分の身体から立ち上る、死とすれすれのにおい。自分の身体が自分の身体を食い始める。ハンストをすればそういうことになる。脂肪が完全になくなり、筋肉もすっかり落ちてしまうと、それからは身体が頭脳を食うようになる。そうなると知覚が失われてくる。目が見えなくなり、耳が聞こえなくなり、五感が失われる。

ヒューズが指揮した第一次ハンストから半年ほど後、ボビー・サンズが指揮官となって第二次ハンストが開始され（ヒューズは第二次ハンストに強く反対していた）、サンズを含む10人が獄中で餓死した。
